Introduction to the Quest
Park Quest teams will pick a wild game animal to embody their quest. They will use their imagination to determine what kinds of food and shelter their animal will need to survive and prosper in nature.
The quest will take place between sunrise and sunset daily. This is a self-guided adventure and staff will not be present. If quest teams require assistance or want to borrow additional resources they will need to stop by the New Germany State Park office between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. Park Quest families are encouraged to print out the Park Quest worksheet to bring with them, or they can visit the New Germany State Park office or nature center to get a copy before arriving at Big Run.
Park visitors are encouraged to visit on weekdays and non-holiday weekends, but in general Big Run State Park is not crowded and the quest can accommodate several teams at one time. No potable water is available and there is no cell phone service at Big Run.
Situated at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir, Big Run State Park is the perfect base camp from which to enjoy the surrounding Savage River State Forest. Campers at Big Run have easy access to fishing, boating (electric motor only), hiking or hunting opportunities. Big Run is secluded and does not have running water or cell phone coverage. There are bathroom facilities. Picnic tables are available on a first come, first serve basis. Primitive camping (no water or electricity provided) is also available on a first come, first serve basis. New Germany State Park, located 8 miles away, has swimming beaches, a boat launch, camping, showers, a snack bar and nature center.
