Welcome to the Maryland Park Service Junior Ranger Program. This program is built around the people and places that make Maryland so special. During this six session program, Junior Rangers will explore the parks natural and historical areas, learn stewardship, and explore recreational opportunities. The best part of becoming a Junior Rangers though is receiving patches of completion and having the opportunity to continue on to bigger and better programs with the Maryland Park Service. Check out Junior Ranger programs for 2014.
Throughout the year, Rangers and naturalists lead children and teens, ages 7- 14 years, through the fundamentals of environmental education and stewardship. Junior Rangers can earn three achievement awards: Basic, Advanced and Expert. Once they complete their Expert Achievement award, they begin to earn patches in our more self guided levels, such as Naturalist, Explorer, Conservationist and Guide.
Requirements for Levels
Programs vary year to year but each session will cover the following: Parks and Park Rangers, Plants, Animals, Planet Earth, Conservation, and People. Junior Rangers is a multi-disciplined outdoor education program with four main outcomes:
The Junior Ranger Sprout program is offered to children 2-4 years of age with the goal of getting young children comfortable and excited about our natural and historical surroundings. Join the Park Ranger, Naturalist, or Historian on a hands on mini adventure in the great outdoors. The Sprout program is only available at select locations. Please check with your State Park for more information.
The Junior Ranger Park Pals program is offered to children 3-7 years of age and is aimed at getting younger children acclimated to the outdoors and prepared for the Junior Ranger Program. Join the Park Ranger, Naturalist, or Historian for great programs and adventures throughout the park. The Park Pals program is only available at select locations. Please check with your State Park for more information.
The Maryland Teen Ranger is the perfect solution to your teenagers question of what do I do now! The Maryland Teen Ranger program is a new program developed to serve the needs of young adults 13-17 years of age and to provide extended opportunity to Junior Ranger graduates, teenagers who did not have the opportunity to attend Junior Rangers, and also school groups looking to become more involved in their local communities and parks.
The mission of the Maryland Teen Rangers is to engage teens in learning, leadership, and service activities that promote the health and well-being of self, community and the natural world.
