Driving Directions:

​From Interstate 68, take Exit 22. Follow Chestnut Ridge Road south 2 miles to the end, and turn left on New Germany Road. Follow New Germany Road south 5 miles, and make a left on Big Run Road. Follow Big Run Road east 5 miles to the end. The park is located at the intersection of Big Run Road and Savage River Road. Campsites - numbered 60 through 90 - are located at the intersection and along Big Run Road.

Certain activities are permitted outside of the regular park hours (e.g. fishing, boat launch, hunting where permitted). Please check with the park before your visit if you plan to engage in an activity which requires you to be in the park before or after the posted hours.


Pet Policy:

​Pets are allowed in the Big Run State Park campground and day-use areas in the park as long as they are on a leash under control of the owner and not disturbing other park visitors.

Big Run State Park

Situated at the mouth of the Savage River Reservoir, Big Run State Park is the perfect base camp from which to enjoy the surrounding Savage River State Forest. Campers at Big Run have easy access to fishing, boating, hiking or hunting opportunities. Autumn visitors have a spectacular view of the changing colors on the surrounding mountain ridges.

Campsites

Family Camping
Big Run has 29 primitive campsites available year-round. Sites 60-75 are wooded, with stone dust camping pads. Sites 78-90 are in an open grassy field. Each campsite has a picnic bench and fire ring. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. A self registration station is located in the lower camping area, along Savage River Rd. Pets are permitted in any of the campsites, on a leash.

Group Campsite/Shelter
The Monroe Run Pavilion is available for rental year-round. The shelter and three adjoining campsites can accommodate up to 25 people. The shelter has a fireplace and electricity. Youth Group Campsite
The Youth Group campsite is available by reservation. It has a central camping pad, with a fire ring and picnic table, and a parking area along the road. Tents may be set up on durable surfaces in the site. The site can accommodate up to 40 youth and adults. To make reservations please contact the Reservation Call Center at 1-888-432-2267 or make a reservation online.

Check in for campsite guests is 3 p.m. and check out is 1 p.m.

Park Amenities

Savage River Pavilion

  • Restrooms - Big Run has two waterless toilet facilities, one at the intersection of Big Run Road and Savage River Road, and the other along Big Run Road, near the Monroe Run Pavilion.
  • Drinking Water - Water is not available at Big Run. Please plan ahead and bring drinking water.
  • Big Run Pavilion - The Big Run Pavilion is available year-round for weddings, reunions, and other large group events. It can accommodate up to 75 people for events between 8:00 A.M. and sunset. Alcohol is permitted with a special permit.

  • Picnicking - Picnic tables are available in the Day Use area of the park, along Big Run Road at the intersection with Savage River Rd. These tables are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Trails - The lower trailhead of the Monroe Run Trail is located adjacent to campsite 62 at Big Run State Park. A small parking area is available. The Monroe Run Trail is open to hikers only – no mountain bikes or ATVs. 
  • Alcohol Policy - Alcohol is prohibited in all areas of Big Run State Park, except at the Big Run Pavilion when a special permit has been issued.
  • All Maryland State Parks are trash-free. Please take your trash home with you and remember to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Savage River Reservoir

Big Run State Park sits at the northern end of the Savage River Reservoir, a popular spot for fishing and non-motorized boating.

Boating
There is a boat ramp between campsites 83 and 84 at Big Run State Park. Lake levels vary throughout the year, so be aware that you may have to carry your boat several feet. Only electric motors or non-motorized boats are permitted. Gasoline motors must be removed before launching your boat.

Fishing
Fishing is permitted year-round with a non-tidal fishing license. Fishermen may find walleye, large mouth bass, crappie, yellow perch, bluegill, catfish, suckers, and trout. There is a brief lake closure each spring when trout stocking begins. A trout stamp is required to possess trout.

Swimming
Swimming is not permitted anywhere in the Savage River Reservoir.
